GitHub Copilot Chat: Guardrails and Fix Patterns
A compact guide to stabilize Copilot Chat when it touches RAG, tool calls, terminals, and long multi-turn coding sessions. Use these checks to localize the failing layer, then jump to the exact WFGY fix page.

Core acceptance
- ΔS(question, retrieved) ≤ 0.45
- Coverage ≥ 0.70 to the target section
- λ remains convergent across three paraphrases and two seeds
- E_resonance stays flat on long windows
Fix in 60 seconds
-
Measure ΔS Compute ΔS(question, retrieved) and ΔS(retrieved, expected anchor). Stable < 0.40, transitional 0.40–0.60, risk ≥ 0.60.
-
Probe with λ_observe Vary k in retrieval and reorder prompt headers. If ΔS stays flat and high, suspect metric or index mismatch. If λ flips, clamp with BBAM and lock the schema.
-
Apply the module
- Retrieval drift → BBMC + Data Contracts
- Reasoning collapse → BBCR bridge + BBAM, then verify with Logic Collapse
- Dead ends in long sessions → BBPF alternate paths
Typical Copilot Chat breakpoints and the right fix
-
Inline chat cites the wrong paragraph after a quick doc peek. Lock cite-then-explain and require snippet fields. Open: Retrieval Traceability, Data Contracts
-
High similarity but wrong meaning when asking about a library API across repos. Rebuild with explicit metric and normalization, then rerank deterministically. Open: Embedding ≠ Semantic, Rerankers
-
Two stage queries drift when using HyDE plus code search. Lock the two queries and pin the reranker. Open: Pattern: Query Parsing Split, Rerankers
-
Terminal chat suggests unsafe commands or edits that bypass guardrails. Enforce schema locks and allow-list tool arguments. Open: Prompt Injection, Logic Collapse
-
Context flips across long refactors where chat history mixes policy text with user turns. Move non-task policy to system and split the plan. Open: Context Drift, Entropy Collapse
-
Agent handoff stalls between chat, code-lens, and terminal with partial memory writes. Split memory namespaces and lock by
mem_revandmem_hash. Open: Multi-Agent Problems -
Fresh branch deploy fails on first call when running evals from the IDE. Add boot fences for index, secrets, and version hash. Open: Bootstrap Ordering, Pre-deploy Collapse
Deep diagnostics
-
Three-paraphrase probe Ask the same question three ways. Log ΔS and λ. If λ flips on harmless paraphrase, clamp with BBAM and tighten snippet schema.
-
Anchor triangulation Compare ΔS to the expected anchor section and to a decoy. If close for both, re-chunk and re-embed. See: Embedding ≠ Semantic
-
Long chain audit If entropy rises after 25–40 steps, split the plan, then re-join with a BBCR bridge. See: Context Drift, Entropy Collapse
Copy-paste prompt for Copilot Chat
You have TXT OS and the WFGY Problem Map loaded.
My Copilot Chat issue:
- symptom: [one line]
- traces: ΔS(question,retrieved)=..., ΔS(retrieved,anchor)=..., λ states across 3 paraphrases
Tell me:
1) the failing layer and why,
2) the exact WFGY page to open,
3) minimal steps to push ΔS ≤ 0.45 and keep λ convergent,
4) a reproducible test to verify the fix.
When relevant, use BBMC, BBPF, BBCR, BBAM.
