editor: Fix soft-wrap in auto-height editors (#54051)
We had an internal report of soft wrap not working in git panel's commit
editor. Given the following settings:
```json
{
  "languages": {
    "Git Commit": {
      "preferred_line_length": 80,
      "soft_wrap": "preferred_line_length",
    },
  },
}
```
We would not soft-wrap in narrow viewports. As it turned out, the
problem was that we were always prefering a `preferred_line_length` as
our soft wrap boundary over the actual width of the editor.

Self-Review Checklist:

- [x] I've reviewed my own diff for quality, security, and reliability
- [x] Unsafe blocks (if any) have justifying comments
- [ ] The content is consistent with the [UI/UX
checklist](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/blob/main/CONTRIBUTING.md#uiux-checklist)
- [ ] Tests cover the new/changed behavior
- [x] Performance impact has been considered and is acceptable

Closes #ISSUE

Release Notes:

- Fixed git commits editor not respecting soft wrap boundaries.
- settings: Removed `"soft_wrap": "preferred_line_length"` in favour of
`"soft_wrap": "bounded"`. Soft wrap now always respects editor width
when it's enabled.

Add scrolling functionality to markdown preview mode (#44585)
Closes #21324

Adds four new commands:
- `markdown::MoveUp`, `markdown::MoveDown` - these scroll up and down in
markdown preview mode, by no more than the height of a large headline.

- `markdown::MoveUpByItem`, and `markdown::MoveDownByItem` - these
scroll up and down by the height of the item at the top of the markdown
preview window. So headlines and large codeblocks, for instance, scroll
further than individual paragraph lines.

Also attempts to create sensible defaults:
`down` -> `markdown::ScrollDown`
`up` -> `markdown::ScrollUp`
`alt-down` -> `markdown::ScrollDownByItem`
`alt-up` -> `markdown::ScrollUpByItem`

And in Vim:

`ctrl-u` -> `markdown::ScrollPageUp`
`ctrl-d` -> `markdown::ScrollPageDown`
`ctrl-e` -> `markdown::ScrollDown`
`ctrl-y` -> `markdown::ScrollUp`

Release Notes:

- Added commands `markdown::ScrollUp`, `markdown::ScrollDown`,
`markdown::ScrollUpByItem`, and `markdown::ScrollDownByItem`
- Changed commands `markdown::MovePageUp` to `markdown::ScrollPageUp`
and `markdown::MovePageDown` to `markdown::ScrollPageDown`

vim: Fix temporary mode exit on end of line (#42742)
When using the end of line motion ($) while in temporary mode, the
cursor would be placed in insert mode just before the last character
instead of after, just like in NeoVim.

This happens because `EndOfLine` kind of assumes that we're in `Normal`
mode and simply places the cursor in the last character instead of the
newline character.

This commit moves the cursor one position to the right when exiting
temporary mode and the motion used was `Motion::EndOfLine`

- Update `vim::normal::Vim.exit_temporary_normal` to now accept a
`Option<&Motion>` argument, in case callers want this new logic to
potentially be applied

Helix Select Mode (#37748)

Closes https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/33906

Release Notes:
- Helix will no longer sometimes fall out into "normal" mode, will
remain in "helix normal" (example: vv)
- Added dedicated "helix select" mode that can be targeted by
keybindings

Known issues:
- [ ] Helix motion, especially surround-add will not properly work in
visual mode, as it won't call `helix_move_cursor`. It is possible
however to respect self.mode in change_selection now.
- [ ] Some operations, such as `Ctrl+A` (increment) or `>` (indent) will
collapse selection also. I haven't found a way to avoid it.

Change keymap precedence to favor user (#37557)
Closes #35623

Previously if a base keymap had a `null` set to an action, leading to a
`NoAction` being assigned to the keymap, if a user wanted to take
advantage of that keymap (in this particular case, `cmd-2`), the keymap
binding check would favor the `NoAction` over the user, since
technically the context depth matched better. Instead, we should always
prefer the user's settings over whatever base or default.

Release Notes:

- Fixed keymap precedence by favoring user settings over base keymap /
configs.

settings ui: Create settings key trait (#37489)
This PR separates out the associated constant `KEY` from the `Settings`
trait into a new trait `SettingsKey`. This allows for the key trait to
be derived using attributes to specify the path so that the new
`SettingsUi` derive macro can use the same attributes to determine top
level settings paths thereby removing the need to duplicate the path in
both `Settings::KEY` and `#[settings_ui(path = "...")]`

editor: Context menu aside scrolling (#35985)
Add support for scrolling the contents rendered aside an
`editor::code_context_menus::CodeContextMenu` by introducing the
`scroll_aside` method.

For now this method is only implemented for the
`CodeContextMenu::Completions` variant, which will scroll the aside
contents for an `editor::code_context_menus::CompletionsMenu` element,
as a `ScrollHandle` is added to the aside content that is rendered.

In order to be possible to trigger this via keybindings, a new editor
action is introduced, `ContextMenuScrollAside`, which accepts a number
of lines or pages to scroll the content by.

Lastly, the default keymaps for both MacOS and Linux, as well as for
Zed's vim mode, are updated to ensure that the following keybindings are
supported when a completion menu is open and the completion item's
documentation is rendered aside:

- `ctrl-e`
- `ctrl-y`
- `ctrl-d`
- `ctrl-u`

Fix clippy::redundant_clone lint violations (#36558)
This removes around 900 unnecessary clones, ranging from cloning a few
ints all the way to large data structures and images.

A lot of these were fixed using `cargo clippy --fix --workspace
--all-targets`, however it often breaks other lints and needs to be run
again. This was then followed up with some manual fixing.

I understand this is a large diff, but all the changes are pretty
trivial. Rust is doing some heavy lifting here for us. Once I get it up
to speed with main, I'd appreciate this getting merged rather sooner
than later.

gpui: Add keybind metadata API (#33316)
Closes #ISSUE

Adds a very simple API to track metadata about keybindings in GPUI,
namely the source of the binding. The motivation for this is displaying
the source of keybindings in the [keymap
UI](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/32436).

The API is designed to be as simple and flexible as possible, storing
only a `Option<u32>` on the bindings themselves to keep the struct
small. It is intended to be used as an index or key into a table/map
created and managed by the consumer of the API to map from indices to
arbitrary meta-data. I.e. the consumer is responsible for both
generating these indices and giving them meaning.

The current usage in Zed is stateless, just a mapping between constants
and User, Default, Base, and Vim keymap sources, however, this can be
extended in the future to also track _which_ base keymap is being used.

vim: Add some forced motion support (#27991)
Closes https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/20971

Added `v` input to yank and delete to override default motion. The
global vim state tracking if the forced motion flag was passed handled
the same way that the count is. [The main chunk of code maps the motion
kind from the default to the overridden
kind](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/27991/files#diff-2dca6b7d1673c912d14e4edc74e415abbe3a4e6d6b37e0e2006d30828bf4bb9cR1249-R1254).
To handle the case of deleting a single character (dv0) at the start of
a row I had to modify the control flow
[here](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/27991/files#diff-2dca6b7d1673c912d14e4edc74e415abbe3a4e6d6b37e0e2006d30828bf4bb9cR1240-R1244).
Then to handle an exclusive delete till the end of the row (dv$) I
[saturated the endpoint with a left
bias](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/27991/files#diff-2dca6b7d1673c912d14e4edc74e415abbe3a4e6d6b37e0e2006d30828bf4bb9cR1281-R1286).

vim: Handle exclusive-linewise edgecase correctly (#27786)
Before this change we didn't explicitly handle vim's exclusive-linewise

Instead we had hard-coded workarounds in a few places to make our tests

The most pernicious of these workarounds was that we represented a

files that

Restore editor state on reopen (#27672)
Closes https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/11626
Part of https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/12853

`"restore_on_file_reopen": true` in workspace settings can now be used
to enable and disable editor data between file reopens in the same pane:

https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/8d938ee1-d854-42a8-bbc3-2a4e4d7d5933

The settings are generic and panes' data store can be extended for
further entities, beyond editors.

---------------
Impl details:

Currently, the project entry IDs seem to be stable across file reopens,
unlike BufferIds, so those were used.
Originally, the DB data was considered over in-memory one as editors
serialize their state anyway, but managing and exposing PaneIds out of
the DB is quite tedious and joining the DB data otherwise is not
possible.

Allow icon themes to provide their own file associations (#24926)
This PR adds the ability for icon themes to provide their own file
associations.

The old `file_types.json` that was previously used to make these
associations has been removed in favor of storing them on the default
theme.

Icon themes have two new fields on them:

- `file_stems`: A mapping of file stems to icon keys.
- `file_suffixes`: A mapping of file suffixes to icon keys.

These mappings produce icon keys which can then be used in `file_icons`
to associate them to a particular icon:

```json
{
  "file_stems": {
    "Makefile": "make"
  },
  "file_suffixes": {
    "idr": "idris"
  },
  "file_icons": {
    "idris": { "path": "./icons/idris.svg" },
    "make": { "path": "./icons/make.svg" }
  }
}
```

When loading an icon theme, the `file_stems` and `file_icons` fields
will be merged with the ones from the base icon theme, with the values
from the icon theme being loaded overriding ones in the base theme.

Release Notes:

- Added the ability for icon themes to provide their own file
associations.

Eliminate GPUI View, ViewContext, and WindowContext types (#22632)
There's still a bit more work to do on this, but this PR is compiling
(with warnings) after eliminating the key types. When the tasks below
are complete, this will be the new narrative for GPUI:

- `Entity<T>` - This replaces `View<T>`/`Model<T>`. It represents a unit
of state, and if `T` implements `Render`, then `Entity<T>` implements
`Element`.
- `&mut App` This replaces `AppContext` and represents the app.
- `&mut Context<T>` This replaces `ModelContext` and derefs to `App`. It
is provided by the framework when updating an entity.
- `&mut Window` Broken out of `&mut WindowContext` which no longer
exists. Every method that once took `&mut WindowContext` now takes `&mut
Window, &mut App` and every method that took `&mut ViewContext<T>` now
takes `&mut Window, &mut Context<T>`

Not pictured here are the two other failed attempts. It's been quite a
month!

Tasks:

- [x] Remove `View`, `ViewContext`, `WindowContext` and thread through
`Window`
- [x] [@cole-miller @mikayla-maki] Redraw window when entities change
- [x] [@cole-miller @mikayla-maki] Get examples and Zed running
- [x] [@cole-miller @mikayla-maki] Fix Zed rendering
- [x] [@mikayla-maki] Fix todo! macros and comments
- [x] Fix a bug where the editor would not be redrawn because of view
caching
- [x] remove publicness window.notify() and replace with
`AppContext::notify`
- [x] remove `observe_new_window_models`, replace with
`observe_new_models` with an optional window
- [x] Fix a bug where the project panel would not be redrawn because of
the wrong refresh() call being used
- [x] Fix the tests
- [x] Fix warnings by eliminating `Window` params or using `_`
- [x] Fix conflicts
- [x] Simplify generic code where possible
- [x] Rename types
- [ ] Update docs

### issues post merge

- [x] Issues switching between normal and insert mode
- [x] Assistant re-rendering failure
- [x] Vim test failures
- [x] Mac build issue

Load all key bindings that parse and use markdown in error notifications (#23113)
* Collects and reports all parse errors

* Shares parsed `KeyBindingContextPredicate` among the actions.

* Updates gpui keybinding and action parsing to return structured
errors.

* Renames "block" to "section" to match the docs, as types like
`KeymapSection` are shown in `json-language-server` hovers.

* Removes wrapping of `context` and `use_key_equivalents` fields so that
`json-language-server` auto-inserts `""` and `false` instead of `null`.

* Updates `add_to_cx` to take `&self`, so that the user keymap doesn't
get unnecessarily cloned.

In retrospect I wish I'd just switched to using TreeSitter to do the
parsing and provide proper diagnostics. This is tracked in #23333

Release Notes:

- Improved handling of errors within the user keymap file. Parse errors
within context, keystrokes, or actions no longer prevent loading the key
bindings that do parse.

Implement Helix Support (WIP) (#19175)
Closes #4642

- Added the ability to switch to helix normal mode, with an additional
helix visual mode.
- <kbd>ctrl</kbd><kbd>h</kbd> from Insert mode goes to Helix Normal
mode. <kbd> i </kbd> and <kbd> a </kbd> to go back.
- Need to find a way to perform the helix normal mode selection with
<kbd> w </kbd>, <kbd>e </kbd>, <kbd> b </kbd> as a first step. Need to
figure out how the mode will interoperate with the VIM mode as the new
additions are in the same crate.
