This updates the nightly workflow to run hourly as opposed to once
daily.

Notably, it also
- changes the poll duration for the auto updater - we now poll 4 times
an hour on the Nightly channel and continue with the old rate for all
other channels
- moves the pre-checks to the linux runners, since we have more
resources available there
- only ever allow one concurrent nightly run

auto_update: Improve Linux rsync hinting (#50637)
Previously, automatic checks could fail quietly and return to idle. This
change ensures missing dependency errors are surfaced in the update UI
with install guidance.

What Changed:

- Added a dedicated `MissingDependencyError` for dependency-related
update failures.
- Updated auto-update polling behavior so:
  - automatic checks still stay quiet for transient/general errors,
- but missing dependency errors are surfaced as
`AutoUpdateStatus::Errored`.
- Improved Linux dependency hinting:
  - distro checks with `/etc/os-release`,
- returns distro-appropriate install hints where possible and falls back
to a generic package-manager message when distro parsing is
unavailable/unknown.

Fix shared database test isolation (#51809)
All of the important changes are in
[`db.rs`](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/51809/changes#diff-2f644eab943bfa58feec29256281a3d9e8d4d7784cd34783e845af8beb15b16d).
Consider reading the commit log in order to review this work.

The DB crate's macro and API was changed to fix flakiness observed in
the MultiWorkspace tests when run locally. This flakiness was caused by
a shared `static LazyLock`, that caused concurrent test runs to interact
with the same underlying in-memory database. This flakiness wasn't
possible on CI due to it's usage of `cargo nextest`, whose
process-per-test approach masked this problem.

Essentially, I've changed the `static_connection` macro to remove the
static database variable and redone the internal model. Now, all
database types are thin wrappers around a generic `AppDatabase`. The
`AppDatabase` collects all of the individual table's migrations via the
`inventory` crate, and so only runs the migrations once on startup,
rather than a dozen times on startup.

The new API requires a `cx` so that we can replace the database returned
at runtime, rather than relying exclusively on a process-global
thread-local. However, we are still using a `static LazyLock` so that we
only need to take an `&App`, instead of an `&mut App`. These databases
types are `Clone + Send + Sync`, so you can easily capture-and-move the
database into background tasks and other places that don't have a `cx`.

For tests that require database isolation, it is now possible to set
their own database in init. See
[`workspace::init_test`](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/51809/changes#diff-041673bbd1947a35d45945636c0055429dfc8b5985faf93f8a8a960c9ad31e28R13610),
for the flakiness fix.

Best part, this change should be entirely compiler driven, so the Zed
agent was able to make the app-wide refactor easily.

auto_update: Strip pre-release and build metadata from release notes URL (#48570)
Without this fix, the zed.dev server doesn't recognize the version with
metadata and redirects to /releases, which
defaults to the Stable channel, so Preview users end up seeing Stable
release notes.

Closes #47539

  Changes:
- Strip pre and build metadata from the semver version in
release_notes_url before constructing the path, so the URL
becomes /releases/preview/0.218.0 instead of
/releases/preview/0.218.0-beta.1+preview.131.68e98a53.
- Standardized the ordering of pre/build clearing to pre-first across
all 4 call sites (2 were build-first).

Open question: With this fix, the URL now points to the specific version
you're running (e.g.
/releases/preview/0.218.0). An alternative would be to link to
/releases/preview (no version) so users can see all
Preview releases, including ones newer than what they have installed. I
went with per-version linking since it matches
the existing intent of the code, but happy to change it if the team
prefers the other approach.

  Release Notes:

- Fixed "View Release Notes" in Preview/Stable opening the wrong release
channel page due to build metadata in the URL.

auto_update: Persist custom icons across app updates on macOS (#49727)
After setting a custom icon on macOS, an `Icon\r` file is generated in
the application's root directory to store the custom icon metadata.
Currently, the update process uses `rsync -av --delete`, which removes
this `Icon\r` file and causes the custom icon to revert to the default
blue folder.

This PR adds the `--exclude 'Icon?'` parameter to ensure the file is
preserved during updates.

Closes #26639 , Closes #29900.

Since I cannot trigger the auto-update mechanism manually, I mounted the
latest Zed disk image and simulated the update by executing the rsync
command in the terminal to verify the fix.

util: Always use posix_spawn on macOS even with pre_exec hooks (#49090)
Here's some backstory:
* on macOS, @cole-miller and I noticed that since roughly Oct 2025, due
to some changes to latest macOS Tahoe, for any spawned child process we
needed to reset Mach exception ports
(https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/36754 +
6e8f2d2ebe)
* the changes in that PR achieve that via `pre_exec` hook on
`std::process::Command` which then abandons `posix_spawn` syscall for
`fork` + `execve` dance on macOS (we tracked it down in Rust's std
implementation)
* as it turns out, `fork` + `execve` is pretty expensive on macOS
(apparently way more so than on other OSes like Linux) and `fork` takes
a process-wide lock on the allocator which is bad
* however, since we wanna reset exception ports on the child, the only
official way supported by Rust's std is to use `pre_exec` hook
* posix_spawn on macOS exposes this tho via a macOS specific extension
to that syscall `posix_spawnattr_setexceptionports_np` but there is no
way to use that via any standard interfaces in `std::process::Command`
* thus, it seemed like a good idea to instead create our own custom
Command wrapper that on non-macOS hosts is a zero-cost wrapper of
`smol::process::Command`, while on macOS we reimplement the minimum to
achieve `smol::process::Command`  with `posix_spawn` under-the-hood

Notably, this changeset improves git-blame in very large repos
significantly.

Release Notes:

- Fixed performance spawning child processes on macOS by always forcing
`posix_spawn` no matter what.

workspace: Move the update Zed button to the title bar (#48467)
Currently, whenever Zed has a new version available for download, the
update button shows up in the status bar. Problem is: that status bar
slot can also display other buttons/information, such as problems with
your language server or general errors. In case the two things exist (a
problem and a new version), just one of them would be displayed, which
is not great; you should be able to see both. Additionally, given we
ship new versions pretty often, I've frequently saw feedback about
wanting to hide away the new version button... at least temporarily
while there's no immediate interest in upgrading.

So, this PR tackles all of that. The button to update a new version is
moved up to the title bar, nearby your avatar, and you have the ability
to dismiss, which effectively just moves the button from the title bar
to inside your user menu.

auto-update: Fix auto-update loop with non-nightly channels (#43595)
There are 3 factors:
1. The Preview channel endpoint does not propagate versions with build
identifier (which we oh-so-conveniently store in pre-release field of
semver).
2. Preview build, once fetched, sees it's version *with* build
identifier (as that's baked into the binary).
3. Auto update logic treats versions with pre-release version as less
than versions without pre-release version.

This in turn makes any Preview client see itself as versioned like
0.214.4-123-asdf1234455311, whereas the latest version on the endpoint
is 0.214.4. Thus, the endpoint version is always more recent than the
client version, causing an update loop.

The fix is to ignore build identifier when comparing versions of
non-nightly channels. This should still let us introduce changes to
auto-update behavior in minor releases in the future.

Remove workspace-hack (#40216)
We've been considering removing workspace-hack for a couple reasons:
- Lukas ran into a situation where its build script seemed to be causing
spurious rebuilds. This seems more likely to be a cargo bug than an
issue with workspace-hack itself (given that it has an empty build
script), but we don't necessarily want to take the time to hunt that
down right now.
- Marshall mentioned hakari interacts poorly with automated crate
updates (in our case provided by rennovate) because you'd need to have
`cargo hakari generate && cargo hakari manage-deps` after their changes
and we prefer to not have actions that make commits.

Currently removing workspace-hack causes our workspace to grow from
~1700 to ~2000 crates being built (depending on platform), which is
mainly a problem when you're building the whole workspace or running
tests across the the normal and remote binaries (which is where
feature-unification nets us the most sharing). It doesn't impact
incremental times noticeably when you're just iterating on `-p zed`, and
we'll hopefully get these savings back in the future when
rust-lang/cargo#14774 (which re-implements the functionality of hakari)
is finished.

Settings refactor (#38367)
Co-Authored-By: Ben K <ben@zed.dev>
Co-Authored-By: Anthony <anthony@zed.dev>
Co-Authored-By: Mikayla <mikayla@zed.dev>

Release Notes:

- settings: Major internal changes to settings. The primary user-facing
effect is that some settings which did not make sense in project
settings files are no-longer read from there. (For example the inline
blame settings)

Add a test that would have caught the bug last week (#38222)
This adds a test to make sure that the default value of the auto update
setting is always true. We manually re-applied the broken code from last
week, and confirmed that this test fails with that code.

Fix auto update not defaulting to true (#38022)
#37337 Made `AutoUpdateSetting` `FileContent =
AutoUpdateSettingsContent` which caused a deserialization bug to occur
because the field it was wrapping wasn't optional. Thus serde would
deserialize the wrapped type `bool` to its default value `false`
stopping the settings load function from reading the correct default
value from `default.json`

I also added a log message that states when the auto updater struct is
checking for updates to make this easier to test.

settings ui: Create settings key trait (#37489)
This PR separates out the associated constant `KEY` from the `Settings`
trait into a new trait `SettingsKey`. This allows for the key trait to
be derived using attributes to specify the path so that the new
`SettingsUi` derive macro can use the same attributes to determine top
level settings paths thereby removing the need to duplicate the path in
both `Settings::KEY` and `#[settings_ui(path = "...")]`

settings_ui: Move settings UI trait to file content (#37337)
Closes #ISSUE

Initially, the `SettingsUi` trait was tied to `Settings`, however, given
that the `Settings::FileContent` type (which may be the same as the type
that implements `Settings`) will be the type that more directly maps to
the JSON structure (and therefore have the documentation, correct field
names (or `serde` rename attributes), etc) it makes more sense to have
the deriving of `SettingsUi` occur on the `FileContent` type rather than
the `Settings` type.

In order for this to work a relatively important change had to be made
to the derive macro, that being that it now "unwraps" options into their
inner type, so a field with type `Option<Foo>` where `Foo: SettingsUi`
will treat the field as if it were just `Foo`, expecting there to be a
default set in `default.json`. This imposes some restrictions on what
`Settings::FileContent` can be as seen in 1e19398 where `FileContent`
itself can't be optional without manually implementing `SettingsUi`, as
well as introducing some risk that if the `FileContent` type has
`serde(default)`, the default value will override the default value from
`default.json` in the UI even though it may differ (but it should!).

A future PR should probably replace the other settings with `FileContent
= Option<T>` (all of which currently have `T == bool`) with wrapper
structs and have `KEY = None` so the further niceties
`derive(SettingsUi)` will provide such as path renaming, custom UI, auto
naming and doc comment extraction can be used.

settings ui: Start work on creating the initial structure (#36904)
## Goal

This PR creates the initial settings ui structure with the primary goal
of making a settings UI that is
- Comprehensive: All settings are available through the UI
- Correct: Easy to understand the underlying JSON file from the UI
- Intuitive
- Easy to implement per setting so that UI is not a hindrance to future
settings changes

### Structure

The overall structure is settings layer -> data layer -> ui layer.

The settings layer is the pre-existing settings definitions, that
implement the `Settings` trait. The data layer is constructed from
settings primarily through the `SettingsUi` trait, and it's associated
derive macro. The data layer tracks the grouping of the settings, the
json path of the settings, and a data representation of how to render
the controls for the setting in the UI, that is either a marker value
for the component to use (avoiding a dependency on the `ui` crate) or a
custom render function.

Abstracting the data layer from the ui layer allows crates depending on
`settings` to implement their own UI without having to add additional UI
dependencies, thus avoiding circular dependencies. In cases where custom
UI is desired, and a creating a custom render function in the same crate
is infeasible due to circular dependencies, the current solution is to
implement a marker for the component in the `settings` crate, and then
handle the rendering of that component in `settings_ui`.

### Foundation

This PR creates a macro and a trait both called `SettingsUi`. The
`SettingsUi` trait is added as a new trait bound on the `Settings`
trait, this allows the type system to guarantee that all settings
implement UI functionality. The macro is used to derived the trait for
most types, and can be modified through attributes for unique cases as
well.

A derive-macro is used to generate the settings UI trait impl, allowing
it the UI generation to be generated from the static information in our
code base (`default.json`, Struct/Enum names, field names, `serde`
attributes, etc). This allows the UI to be auto-generated for the most
part, and ensures consistency across the UI.

#### Immediate Follow ups

- Add a new `SettingsPath` trait that will be a trait bound on
`SettingsUi` and `Settings`
- This trait will replace the `Settings::key` value to enable
`SettingsUi` to infer the json path of it's derived type
- Figure out how to render `Option<T> where T: SettingsUi` correctly
- Handle `serde` attributes in the `SettingsUi` proc macro to correctly
get json path from a type's field and identity
