# Objective
Fixes#60922
The remote development documentation references action names as
hardcoded strings (`projects: open in wsl`, `projects: open wsl`). These
can drift out of sync with the actual action definitions in code and
don't benefit from the docs preprocessor's auto-rendering.
## Solution
Replaced hardcoded action name strings with the `{#action ...}`
preprocessor template syntax in `docs/src/remote-development.md`:
- `{#action projects::OpenFolderInWsl}` for "Opening a local folder in
WSL"
- `{#action projects::OpenWsl}` for "Opening a folder already in WSL"
This ensures the docs auto-resolve the human-readable action name from
the code definition, preventing future drift.
## Testing
- Verified the `{#action ...}` syntax is documented in
`docs/README.md:78-82` and implemented in
`crates/docs_preprocessor/src/main.rs`.
- Reviewed the action definitions in `crates/zed_actions/src/lib.rs:843`
(`OpenFolderInWsl`) and `lib.rs:852` (`OpenWsl`) to confirm correct
namespace and struct names.
- No code changes, docs only — no build or test required.

Splits the crate graph.
Before, the compilation graph: `editor → picker_preview → search →
project_panel → open_path_prompt → recent_projects → title_bar →
collab_ui → zed`
After, the compilation graph: `editor → picker_preview → search →
agent_ui → sidebar → zed`
With sccache disabled and project fully built, `touch
crates/editor/src/editor.rs` and `cargo build -p zed` took time
Before (5e1fd392f6): 13.19s
After: 11.85s (-10.2% speed up)
Each commit contains a separate compilation instructions, and a test in
the final commit.
The main approach is to split coupled crates and replace them with
`zed_actions` and move some shared functionality into `git_ui_core` new,
shared module.
I've also tried to add a test to prevent common pitfalls, but not sure
I'm happy with the end result — can remove it if it looks too synthetic.

The notebook editor has actions for adding and moving cells but no way
to delete one. This adds `notebook::DeleteCell`:
- Trash icon button in the notebook toolbar (own group below
add-markdown/add-code, disabled when the notebook has no cells)
- Jupyter-style `d d` binding plus `backspace` in cell command mode
(macOS and Linux keymaps)
- Deletes the selected cell; selection moves to the neighboring cell,
focus returns to command mode, and the item is marked dirty via the
existing structural-change tracking so saving persists the deletion
Tested locally on macOS with the notebook feature enabled: button click
and bindings delete the selected cell and saving writes the result.
(Screenshots in comments.)
Release Notes:
- Added a delete-cell action (`d d` in command mode and a toolbar
button) to the notebook editor (preview-only).

Sometimes when creating Git worktrees, it's necessary to set things up
so the new worktree is ready. For example, copying env.vars, installing
dependencies, etc. That was already possible in Zed through the tasks
system, but you'd only maybe know about that if you read the
documentation or is super familiar with it already; nothing in the
product in the context of worktrees told you about that. This is what
this PR does.
Now, in the worktree picker, there's a "" button that opens the
`tasks.json` file exposing the `create_worktree` hook, which allows you
to plugin all sorts of things to be run by the time of a worktree
creation. If you don't already have a `tasks.json` file, we will create
a new one for you with a worktree-creation template. Otherwise, we
either append the `create_worktree` hook content to it or just open the
file.

# Objective
Ensure that all existing panels have corresponding menu items in the
"View" menu. I was onboarding a friend to Zed yesterday that was having
a hard time figuring out how to interact with the Agent. Although he did
open the "View" menu, I noticed that the Agent panel item was missing
from there, making it hard for new users to discover it exists.
## Solution
* Add both "Agent Panel" and "Git Panel" entries to the menu items for
the "View" app menu.
* Update the action used for the "Terminal Panel" menu item from
`terminal_panel::ToggleFocus` to `terminal_panel::Toggle` to ensure we
display a shortcut for this menu item.
* Another valid option would be to update the default keymap to use
`terminal_panel::ToggleFocus` instead but that would probably break
existing user's expectations that the default shortcut toggles the
terminal panel, instead of toggling its focus.
* Introduce `zed_actions::git_panel` to be able to extract its
`ToggleFocus` action, following the existing pattern.
### Next Steps
It's worth noting that, even though there's now an "Agent Panel" item
mapped to the `assistant::ToggleFocus` action, its default keybinding is
not displayed (at least on macOS), because of the way it's defined as
`cmd-?` . Using `cmd-shift-/` instead doesn't work, so we'll likely have
to update `MacKeyboardMapper` to allow mapping between shifted and
unshifted keys equivalent, that is, when `?` is detected, it is able to
determine that, in the user's layout that is the result of `shift-/`.

Release Notes:
- Added "Agent Panel" and "Git Panel" items to the "View" menu
This PR explores the addition of a new feature and UI to improve
visibility into partially staged commits.
Currently, the Git panel shows tracked and untracked changes, but it
does not clearly distinguish between staged and unstaged changes.
As a result, it’s difficult to quickly see which changes are not staged
in the current UI. Both staged and unstaged changes are combined into
the `Uncommitted Changes` multibuffer. This developer experience differs
from other editors, most notably VS Code; which presents separate Staged
Changes and Changes lists.
### Staged and unstaged diffs in multibuffers
This PR introduces an alternative UI for unstaged changes that aligns
with the overall Zed experience. Instead of showing changes on a
per-file basis, staged and unstaged diffs are each displayed in their
own multibuffers, similar to how `Uncommitted Changes` currently works.
For example the following screenshot shows the current `Uncommitted
Changes` on the left, the `Staged Changes` in the middle and the
`Unstaged Changes` buffer on the right for comparison
<img width="1408" height="859"
src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/aa709f7a-041d-4cb1-95d6-84c0f5fff688"
/>
### Indicators/interactions
The new multibuffers can be opened in two ways:
1. Via a new `U` chip, which appears when a file has unstaged changes
2. Via new menu options
(See screenshots below for both interaction paths.)
<table>
<tr>
<td style="text-align: center; vertical-align: top;">
<p>via the chip</p>

alt="Via the menu"
/>
</td>
</tr>
</table>
### Design goals
- minimally intrusive UI changes (small new badge and menu items)
- adhere by Zed'ism (use multibuffer where possible)
- avoid disabling any current interactions (Uncommitted Changes ui is
unchanged)
- avoid introducing an app level view mode (no new settings needed)
### Experience goals
- make it easy to see what changes are not staged
- make it easy to see that a file has unstaged changes (avoid developers
accidently leaving out changes in a commit; a personal issue that I have
when using Zed)
- elegantly handle large file's unstaged changes (follows the same
collapse and expanding seen in `Uncommitted Changes`)
### How to try
- Clone the repo and run `cargo run`
- Make a change to a file and stage it
- Make another change to the file (the `U` indicator will appear)
- Click the `U` to see the unstaged view
### Open questions/rough edges
- [ ] determine if this user experience is useful for others
- [ ] ensure all interactions work as expected (response to all update
cases)
In general I'm really interested in hearing the community's feedback
about this interface, more than happy to make any changes or explore a
different solution!

Overhauls Zed's pickers to make them resizable and give them a preview.
Closes#8279
### Background
The most requested Zed feature has the last year has been a [Telescope
like search box](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/8279)
[discussion](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/discussions/22581).
To understand why this is so popular we need to understand search can
serve thee goals:
- Navigation: fuzzy search is faster & easier then clicking in a file
tree
- Exploration: example, find a function by a word in its doc comment
- Collecting: example, getting a list of functions to change
The project search which shows results in a multibuffer is the perfect
way to operate on a list of items. Navigation and Exploration need a lot
of context around each result and offer fast navigation between them.
For both of these live searching is also critical.
The `telescope UI` is a picker with a preview to the right or below.
It's offered in various editors and IDE's most famously Neovim (through
the Telescope plugin), IntelliJ (natively), Helix (natively) and of
course VScode (plugins) and it's _many_ forks.
While having a UI like that for text search (our project search) is most
requested the UX pattern is applied widely, from `find_all_references`
to `bookmarks`. It enhances most pickers. Note that we have over 50
different picker modals!
The community has tried to build something like this for Zed:
- https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/45307
- https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/46478
- https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/43790
These all became huge PR's that we could not merge for various reasons.
This is a really hard feature to integrate in Zed!
This PR got started as https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/46478
and supercedes that.
### Design
- Extend pickers to support an optional preview with minimal changes to
the pickers themselves.
- Make pickers resizable.
- Complement the existing search do not replace it by having both UI's
share the underlying search and allow freely switching between them.
- Allow extending the preview to things other then files.
- Maintain a clean design on all the pickers.
### Heigh level Implementation overview
- Adds an `Option<Preview>` to `Picker`
- Gives `PickerDelegate` a method to communicate a preview to the Picker
- Overhaul the way pickers are drawn to allow for resizing them.
Implemented on the `Shape` and `SizeBouds` structs.
- Adds a high level way to draw the `footer` and `editor` so we do not
need to change much to the pickers.
- Adds a new text finder Picker
- Adds a way to take a running search from project search and hand it to
the text finder Picker and the other way round
- Give the file finder a preview
### Next steps
A more detailed list and how to help out will be added to the tracking
issue for [Pickes with
previews](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/56037)
- Add more previews to more pickers!
- Enable selectioning multiple items in pickers and performing actions
on those
- Open selected items in a multibuffer
- Add a way to restore the last picker
- Make popovers (picker attached to some menu) resizable as well

Adds a dedicated Sandbox settings page under the AI settings, letting
users review and manage the elevated terminal sandbox permissions that
are always allowed without prompting.
The page exposes:
- Network: an "Allow All Domains" toggle and an editable list of allowed
domains (exact domains or leading-`*.` subdomain wildcards), with
validation.
- Filesystem: an "Allow All Filesystem Writes" toggle and an editable
list of writable paths.
- Sandbox: an "Allow Unsandboxed Terminal Commands" toggle.
This replaces the single "Allow Unsandboxed Terminal Commands" setting
item with the new page, and updates the agent panel's settings shortcut
to open it. "Allow always" sandbox grants now persist to settings only
and are no longer also cached as an in-memory thread grant.

This migrates the `Workspace::show_error` method to take a generic type
that implements `WorkspaceError` instead. That trait containts methods
to show a proper error message but most importantly means to help with
providing actions given certain errors.
The intention for this is rather easy: Whenever we show an error to the
user on the workspace level, that error should be
- actionable to a degree, even if that is only opening logs or whatnot
- show a message that is understandable to the user
- for not-too-critical errors, should hide after a certain delay and not
force the user to dismiss it using their mouse.
For now, there exist trait implementations for string error types and
anyhow errors. The long term goal here is to get rid of these altogether
and migrate everything to be strongly typed and especially actionable
instead.

Replaces the legacy Rules creation UI with a focused "New Skill"
creation window when the `SkillsFeatureFlag` is on.
The new `skills_library` crate provides a single-skill form with:
- Name, Description, and Body fields (placeholders double as labels)
- Live validation matching the SKILL.md spec (name: 1–64 lowercase +
digits + hyphens, no leading/trailing hyphen; description: non-empty,
≤1024 chars)
- A scope dropdown listing every local worktree in the originating
workspace plus "Global"
- An Optional Parameters card with the `disable-model-invocation`
checkbox
- Save writes `<scope>/.agents/skills/<name>/SKILL.md` via
`serde_yaml_ng` (YAML-safe escaping), refuses to overwrite existing
skills, shows a success toast in the originating workspace, then closes
the window
The "Rules" entry in the agent panel triple-dot menu is renamed to
"Skills" when the flag is on. The existing `cmd-alt-l` keyboard shortcut
still works: `AgentPanel::deploy_rules_library` reroutes to
`deploy_skills_library` when the flag is on, so any persisted keymaps
and the menu's automatic shortcut lookup keep functioning without
changes to the default keymap files.
The old `rules_library` crate is intentionally left in place for this PR
— once the flag rolls out and the few remaining `OpenRulesLibrary {
prompt_to_select }` call sites (in thread_view link handlers and
@-mention crease) are migrated to an "open existing skill" flow, a
follow-up can delete the crate entirely.
15 unit tests cover the validation rules, frontmatter formatting
(including YAML-special-character round-tripping), and disk write
behavior (creates directory, refuses overwrite).

Adds a one-time, idempotent startup migration that moves every user Rule
out of the `PromptStore` LMDB database into the new Skills + AGENTS.md
world, in a single pass:
- **Non-Default Rules → global Skills.** Each one becomes
`~/.agents/skills/<slug>/SKILL.md` with `disable-model-invocation:
true`, preserving the original behavior that non-Default Rules were only
ever invoked when the user named them. They're now invokable via
`/skill-name` (and still `@`-mentions).
- **Default Rules → global AGENTS.md.** Each one is appended to
`paths::agents_file()` (e.g. `~/.config/zed/AGENTS.md` on macOS/Linux,
`%APPDATA%\Zed\AGENTS.md` on Windows) under an `## H2` heading
containing the rule's title. Default Rules used to be auto-included in
every conversation; the global AGENTS.md is loaded into the system
prompt of every conversation, so the behavior is preserved.
- **Customized built-in prompts → global AGENTS.md** (currently just the
commit-message prompt). If the user has edited a built-in away from
Zed's shipped `default_content()`, the edited body is appended at the
top of the AGENTS.md block. Uncustomized built-ins (still on the shipped
default) are skipped so we don't pollute AGENTS.md with text the user
never wrote.
The migration is gated on the `skills` feature flag — users without the
flag never have their Rules touched in any way. A single global KVP flag
(`rules_to_skills_migration_done`) short-circuits the migration on
subsequent launches, so it runs at most once per machine even across
release channels. A process-lifetime `AtomicBool` guard additionally
prevents racing duplicate spawns when the underlying `cx.on_flags_ready`
callback fires multiple times at startup.
Migration is intentionally non-destructive: rule rows in the LMDB
database stay in place. Users can still see and edit them through the
existing UI, and a downgrade to a Zed build without skills support won't
lose anything.
Slug generation (`agent_skills::slugify_skill_name`) lowercases ASCII
letters, turns spaces into dashes, and drops every other
non-alphanumeric character entirely — so `foo!bar` becomes `foobar`, not
`foo-bar`. `&` is special-cased to become `and` (so `rock&roll` →
`rock-and-roll`). Slug collisions and pre-existing skill directories are
handled by appending `-2`, `-3`, etc.
A title-bar onboarding banner ("Skills have replaced Rules") surfaces
for every user on the `skills` feature flag. Clicking it opens a small
`AlertModal`-based explainer that summarizes the two destinations and
points users at the new `/skill-name` slash command (and notes that
`@`-mentions still work).

- Add an explicit seed-query override to `deploy`, so the Cmd-E action
can force `SeedQuerySetting::Always` while regular deploy callers
continue to pass `None` and respect the user’s
`seed_search_query_from_cursor` setting.
- By going through `deploy`, Cmd-E now also runs the search path that
keeps buffer-search navigation state in sync:
- shows/initializes the search bar for the active searchable item
- applies the seeded query via `search_suggested`
- calls `search`, which updates the query editor, search options, active
search query, search history, and macOS find pasteboard
- refreshes `searchable_items_with_matches` and `active_match_index`
- activates the current match after the search completes
- This ensures the subsequent Cmd-G action has the expected active
query, match list, search token, and active match index to select the
next result.
- Add a macOS-only end-to-end regression test using the default macOS
keymap with `simulate_keystrokes("cmd-e")` and
`simulate_keystrokes("cmd-g")`.
### Validation
- `cargo test -p search test_cmd_e_then_cmd_g_uses_selection_for_find`
- `cargo fmt --check --package search --package zed_actions`
- `./script/check-keymaps`
- `cargo check -p search`
- `cargo check -p workspace`
- `cargo check -p vim`
Release Notes:
- Fixed macOS Cmd-E/Cmd-G find behavior so Cmd-E seeds find from the
cursor or selection and Cmd-G advances through the newly seeded matches.
This PR makes Zed only have one worktree picker, as opposed to a flavor
of it in the title bar and another in the agent panel. It then moves it
to the title bar, making it always present, so that its trigger is
separate from the branch picker (which now contains only two views:
branches and stashes). For the worktree picker, I'm mostly favoring the
behavior we've introduced in the agent-panel-flavored version.
It also updates the title bar settings migration to use the JSON
`migrate_settings` helper instead of a shallow Tree-sitter rewrite, so
old `show_branch_icon = true` values are promoted to
`show_branch_status_icon = true` across root, platform, release-channel,
and profile settings scopes.
- [x] Move worktree creation logic to the `git_ui` crate to make this
more generic and less agent-specific
- [x] Double-check the remote use case and ensure nothing broke there
- [x] Improve the UX for the detached HEAD state; better invite people
to create a branch
- [x] Migrate `show_branch_icon = true` to `show_branch_status_icon =
true` across nested settings scopes
Suggested .rules additions
When migrating renamed settings keys that can appear in platform
overrides, release-channel overrides, or profiles, prefer the JSON
`migrations::migrate_settings` helper over shallow Tree-sitter key
rewrites unless tests explicitly cover every nested scope that can
contain the key.
Release Notes:
- Improved migration of the title bar branch status icon setting.

This fixes an issue reported by @Veykril where the "Try Now" button
would open a different panel than the agent panel. The bug was caused by
us attempting to focus the agent panel before layout settings updates
had been applied.
This should also make all programmatic settings updates more responsive,
because they won't have to wait for FS watchers to take effect.

Overrides `ctrl-tab` when the sidebar/agent panel is focused to switch
between recently viewed threads
Release Notes:

The tab context menu has "Copy Path", "Open in Terminal", and "Reveal In
Project Panel" but no way to reveal the file in the system file manager.
This action already exists in three other context menus (editor
right-click, project panel, outline panel) but was missing from tab
right-click.
## Changes
Adds a platform-specific entry to the tab context menu:
- **macOS:** "Reveal in Finder"
- **Windows:** "Reveal in File Explorer"
- **Linux:** "Reveal in File Manager"
Placed after "Copy Relative Path" and before "Pin Tab". Gated behind
`is_local` (including WSL with host interop) to match the project
panel's behavior. Uses the existing `project.reveal_path()`
infrastructure, which handles platform-specific file manager invocation
and WSL path conversion.
## Prior art
Every major editor has this in the tab context menu:
- VS Code: "Reveal in Finder" (macOS) / "Reveal in File Explorer"
(Windows)
- JetBrains IDEs: Right-click tab -> "Open in" -> "Finder"
- Sublime Text: Right-click tab -> "Reveal in Finder"
Zed already has this in the editor body right-click menu (`Cmd-K R`),
project panel (`Alt-Cmd-R`), and outline panel. The tab context menu was
the only place it was missing.
This contribution was developed with AI assistance (Claude Code).
Release Notes:
- Added "Reveal in Finder" to the tab context menu

This PR adds a "Resolve with Agent" button in each merge conflict block,
as well as "Resolve Conflicts with Agents" button on a notification for
resolving conflicts across all the files that have any. When clicking on
either of these buttons, the agent panel opens up with a template prompt
auto-submitted. For the first case, the specific content of the merge
block is already attached as context for the agent to act quickly, given
it's a local and small context. For the second case (all conflicts
across the codebase), the prompt just indicates to the agent which files
have conflicts and then it's up for the agent to see them. This felt
like a simpler way to go as opposed to extracting the content for all
merge conflicts across all damaged files.
Here's how the UI looks like:

This PR removes onboarding modals for features that were announced, at
this point, a long time ago: Git v1, Debugger, and Agent Panel v1. This
cleans up the actions list a bit when you search for "onboarding". I
left the ACP and Claude Code ones, though; they were the two more recent
ones, but we should be able to remove them soon enough, too.

Remove the `AgentsPanel` (from the `agent_ui_v2` crate) and the utility
pane infrastructure from the codebase.
The Agents Panel was a separate panel gated behind the `agent-v2`
feature flag that was redundant with the existing Agent Panel. Utility
panes were a layout concept (secondary panes next to the editor,
separate from dock panels) whose only consumer was `AgentThreadPane` in
the Agents Panel.
### Changes
- Deleted the entire `agent_ui_v2` crate (`agents_panel.rs`,
`agent_thread_pane.rs`)
- Deleted `workspace/src/utility_pane.rs`
- Removed `UtilityPane`, `UtilityPaneHandle`, `UtilityPanePosition`,
`MinimizePane`, `ClosePane` from `workspace/src/dock.rs`
- Removed all utility pane fields, methods, and render blocks from
`workspace.rs`
- Removed all aside toggle code from `pane.rs` and `pane_group.rs`
- Removed `agents_panel_dock` setting from agent settings and
`default.json`
- Removed all `agent_ui_v2` references from `main.rs`, `zed.rs`, and
Cargo.toml files
- Cleaned up test code in `tool_permissions.rs` and `agent_ui.rs`
Closes AI-17
