While building Zed with nightly rustc I've noticed it doesn't compile
because of good old pathfinder_simd. It also emits a bunch of warnings
about use of f64 literals where f32 is expected, so I've fixed them - it
should make future upgrades more straightforward.
Currently, Zed's "VSCode" keymap has certain discrepancies that are not
changed for compatibility reasons, e.g. opening inline assistant is
different in each editor.
To simplify the transition, extract VSCode bindings its own keymap so in
the future it's simpler to accept changes to each keymap separately.
Caveat: people who had ever changed the keymap, will have VSCode keymap
in their settings which will change their bindings slightly after this
commit is released.
I had to introduce more logic to `null` handling as had to somehow
disable `ctrl-enter` on mac from spawning the inline assistant block for
VSCode keymap (it's cmd-i there).

- Split VSCode and Zed keymap files
This PR makes it so that when you install an agent from the registry we
set it as the default agent. We apply the same behaviour when installing
an ACP agent from the onboarding page, which should make it less
confusing for new users (they won't see the Zed agent when they see a
new thread, but instead see the agent they installed)

Release Notes:
- agent: Improved onboarding experience when installing ACP agents
The recent "pickers with previews" overhaul left the picker
sizing/presentation API spread across several overlapping knobs that
every call site had to set correctly — and many didn't, causing pickers
across the app to render at the wrong width, lose their container, or
stop dismissing. This PR consolidates that surface into a small,
hard-to-misuse API and makes correct sizing the default.
Net effect: a plain `Picker::uniform_list(delegate, …)` now renders
correctly out of the box (standard width, standard max-height, shrinks
to fit, dismisses properly), and the ~35 call sites only specify what
genuinely differs.
## API changes
**Presentation** — three overlapping booleans (`is_modal`, `is_popover`,
`is_resizable`) collapsed into one enum, with resizability living inside
the only variant where it's meaningful:
```rust
enum Presentation {
Modal { resizable: bool }, // own chrome, dismisses on blur, optionally resizable
Popover, // own chrome, dismisses on blur, never resizable
Embedded, // host container owns chrome + dismissal
}
```
- `modal(bool)` is **removed** in favor of explicit, self-documenting
builders:
- *(default)* → `Modal` (resizable iff it has a preview)
- `.popover()` → `Popover` (menu-attached surfaces)
- `.embedded()` → `Embedded` (pickers nested in a larger modal/view)
- Dynamic callers use `.when(cond, Picker::embedded)` (added `impl
FluentBuilder for Picker`).
**Sizing** — preview-vs-not now drives everything; the manual padding
knob is gone:
| Before | After |
|---|---|
| `vertical_padding` field + `no_vertical_padding()` | removed — derived
from whether a preview is visible |
| `height(...)` (ambiguous: fixed vs max) | `max_height(...)` (plain
pickers shrink-to-fit, capped here) |
| `minimum_results_width(...)` | removed — a plain picker's min width
tracks its opening width; preview pickers use standard internal pane
mins |
| default size = 60% viewport | default = `DEFAULT_MODAL_WIDTH` (34rem)
× `DEFAULT_MODAL_MAX_HEIGHT` (24rem, max) |
| resize handles gated on `is_modal` | gated on `is_resizable` (new
`resizable(bool)` builder; auto-`true` for preview pickers) |
Call sites now only override the exceptions: narrow popover selectors
(`initial_width`), the taller outline view (`max_height`), and preview
pickers (constructed via `*_with_preview`).
## Behavior fixes
- **Wrong widths everywhere**: pickers were falling back to
60%-of-viewport because the original migration set
`minimum_results_width` but never `initial_width`. Fixed at the source
via the new defaults.
- **Popovers had no container and wouldn't dismiss**: `is_modal=false`
was suppressing both the elevated background *and* blur-dismiss. Split
out so popovers keep their chrome and dismiss on click-away/escape. This
fixed the agent-panel model/profile selectors, sidebar recent projects,
and the settings theme/font/icon/ollama pickers (which were incorrectly
using `modal(false)`).
- **Sidebar recent projects stretched to full height**: was missing the
shrink-to-fit behavior; now capped and content-sized like other
popovers.
- **Preview crash**: removed an over-strict `debug_assert!` that
panicked when previewing an empty file (`message == None && editor
empty` is valid).
- **Preview-aware default size**: pickers open at standard width with
the preview hidden, and expand to the larger "telescope" size when a
preview is shown. Fixes the text finder rendering super-wide by default,
and makes the file finder expand (rather than cram its results) when you
toggle the preview.

# Objective
- Fixes#59643.
## Problems
- Initial and minimum width was not migrated for all pickers.
- Some pickers had their width still determined by their wrapper.
- Some pickers where not modals but did not have modal false set.
## Solution
- Migrate the pickers we missed.
- Remove the width being set on the div's wrapping the pickers.
- Set modal false on the missed pickers.

Overhauls Zed's pickers to make them resizable and give them a preview.
Closes#8279
### Background
The most requested Zed feature has the last year has been a [Telescope
like search box](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/8279)
[discussion](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/discussions/22581).
To understand why this is so popular we need to understand search can
serve thee goals:
- Navigation: fuzzy search is faster & easier then clicking in a file
tree
- Exploration: example, find a function by a word in its doc comment
- Collecting: example, getting a list of functions to change
The project search which shows results in a multibuffer is the perfect
way to operate on a list of items. Navigation and Exploration need a lot
of context around each result and offer fast navigation between them.
For both of these live searching is also critical.
The `telescope UI` is a picker with a preview to the right or below.
It's offered in various editors and IDE's most famously Neovim (through
the Telescope plugin), IntelliJ (natively), Helix (natively) and of
course VScode (plugins) and it's _many_ forks.
While having a UI like that for text search (our project search) is most
requested the UX pattern is applied widely, from `find_all_references`
to `bookmarks`. It enhances most pickers. Note that we have over 50
different picker modals!
The community has tried to build something like this for Zed:
- https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/44530
- https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/45307
- https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/46478
- https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/43790
These all became huge PR's that we could not merge for various reasons.
This is a really hard feature to integrate in Zed!
This PR got started as https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/46478
and supercedes that.
### Design
- Extend pickers to support an optional preview with minimal changes to
the pickers themselves.
- Make pickers resizable.
- Complement the existing search do not replace it by having both UI's
share the underlying search and allow freely switching between them.
- Allow extending the preview to things other then files.
- Maintain a clean design on all the pickers.
### Heigh level Implementation overview
- Adds an `Option<Preview>` to `Picker`
- Gives `PickerDelegate` a method to communicate a preview to the Picker
- Overhaul the way pickers are drawn to allow for resizing them.
Implemented on the `Shape` and `SizeBouds` structs.
- Adds a high level way to draw the `footer` and `editor` so we do not
need to change much to the pickers.
- Adds a new text finder Picker
- Adds a way to take a running search from project search and hand it to
the text finder Picker and the other way round
- Give the file finder a preview
### Next steps
A more detailed list and how to help out will be added to the tracking
issue for [Pickes with
previews](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/56037)
- Add more previews to more pickers!
- Enable selectioning multiple items in pickers and performing actions
on those
- Open selected items in a multibuffer
- Add a way to restore the last picker
- Make popovers (picker attached to some menu) resizable as well

This PR refactors the highlight map capture name resolution to be faster
and more predictable. Speficically,
- it changes the capture name matching to explicit prefix matching
(e.g., `function.call.whatever.jsx` will now be matched by only
`function`, `function.call`, `function.call.whatever` and
`function.call.whatever.jsx`). This matches the behavior VSCode has
- resolving highlights is now much more efficient, as we now look up
captures in a BTreeMap as opposed to searching in a Vector for these.
This substantially improves the performance for resolving capture names
against themes. With the benchmark added here for creating the
HighlightMap, we see quite some improvements:
```
Running benches/highlight_map.rs (target/release/deps/highlight_map-f99da68650aac85b)
HighlightMap::new/small_captures/small_theme
time: [161.90 ns 162.70 ns 163.55 ns]
change: [-39.027% -38.352% -37.742%] (p = 0.00 < 0.05)
Performance has improved.
Found 3 outliers among 100 measurements (3.00%)
3 (3.00%) high mild
HighlightMap::new/small_captures/large_theme
time: [231.37 ns 233.02 ns 234.70 ns]
change: [-91.570% -91.516% -91.464%] (p = 0.00 < 0.05)
Performance has improved.
HighlightMap::new/large_captures/small_theme
time: [991.82 ns 994.94 ns 998.50 ns]
change: [-50.670% -50.443% -50.220%] (p = 0.00 < 0.05)
Performance has improved.
Found 5 outliers among 100 measurements (5.00%)
5 (5.00%) high mild
HighlightMap::new/large_captures/large_theme
time: [1.6528 µs 1.6650 µs 1.6784 µs]
change: [-91.684% -91.637% -91.593%] (p = 0.00 < 0.05)
Performance has improved.
Found 1 outliers among 100 measurements (1.00%)
1 (1.00%) low mild
```
For large themes and many capture names, the revised approach is much
faster.
With that in place, we can also add better fallbacks whenever we change
tokens, since e.g. a change from `@variable` to `@preproc` would
previously cause tokens to not be highlighted at all, whereas now we can
add fallbacks for such cases more efficiently. I'll add this later on to
this PR.

Release Notes:
- Improved resolution speed of theme highlight capture names. This might
change highlighting in some rare edge cases, but should overall make
highlighting more predicatable. Theme captures will now follow a strict
prefix matching, so e.g. function.call.decorator.jsx` will now be
matched by only `function`, `function.call`, `function.call.decorator`
and `function.call.decorator.jsx` with the most specific capture always
taking precedence.

All of the important changes are in
[`db.rs`](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/51809/changes#diff-2f644eab943bfa58feec29256281a3d9e8d4d7784cd34783e845af8beb15b16d).
Consider reading the commit log in order to review this work.
The DB crate's macro and API was changed to fix flakiness observed in
the MultiWorkspace tests when run locally. This flakiness was caused by
a shared `static LazyLock`, that caused concurrent test runs to interact
with the same underlying in-memory database. This flakiness wasn't
possible on CI due to it's usage of `cargo nextest`, whose
process-per-test approach masked this problem.
Essentially, I've changed the `static_connection` macro to remove the
static database variable and redone the internal model. Now, all
database types are thin wrappers around a generic `AppDatabase`. The
`AppDatabase` collects all of the individual table's migrations via the
`inventory` crate, and so only runs the migrations once on startup,
rather than a dozen times on startup.
The new API requires a `cx` so that we can replace the database returned
at runtime, rather than relying exclusively on a process-global
thread-local. However, we are still using a `static LazyLock` so that we
only need to take an `&App`, instead of an `&mut App`. These databases
types are `Clone + Send + Sync`, so you can easily capture-and-move the
database into background tasks and other places that don't have a `cx`.
For tests that require database isolation, it is now possible to set
their own database in init. See
[`workspace::init_test`](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/51809/changes#diff-041673bbd1947a35d45945636c0055429dfc8b5985faf93f8a8a960c9ad31e28R13610),
for the flakiness fix.
Best part, this change should be entirely compiler driven, so the Zed
agent was able to make the app-wide refactor easily.

Previously, if you wanted to have a button that contains icons on both
edges, you'd need to use a `ButtonLike` component, which takes any
children. Meanwhile, the `Button` would only take one icon, where you
could control its position through the `IconPosition` enum. This has
always felt unnecessarily limiting. So, this PR removes this limitation
by adding two new methods to the button: `start_icon` and `end_icon`.
In the meantime, I have also been bothered by the unnecessary
indirection in the `IconButton` due to the existence of the `ButtonIcon`
component. So I figured I could also completely eliminate that by adding
some of its methods directly to the `IconButton` and in the Button, just
using a regular `Icon` component.
---
## Before
```rust
Button::new("id", "Label")
.icon(IconName::Plus)
.icon_position(IconPosition::Start)
.icon_size(IconSize::Small)
.icon_color(Color::Muted)
```
## After
```rust
Button::new("id", "Label")
.start_icon(Icon::new(IconName::Check))
.end_icon(Icon::new(IconName::ChevronDown).size(IconSize::XSmall))
```
This should have no visual impact to the UI.

Currently we always compute breadcrumbs and sticky headers on every
editor paint which is not cheap to do especially in bigger files, moving
this off to be computed on event handling where they change and then
caching them can save serveral milliseconds per render in bigger files.

Problem:
- The status bar’s pending keystroke indicator (shown next to --NORMAL--
in Vim mode) didn’t clear when focus moved to another context, e.g.
hitting g in the editor then clicking the Git panel. The keymap state
correctly canceled the prefix, but observers that render the indicator
never received a “pending input changed” notification, so the UI kept
showing stale prefixes until a new keystroke occurred.
Fix:
- The change introduces a `pending_input_changed_queued` flag and a new
helper `notify_pending_input_if_needed` which will flushes the queued
notification as soon as we have an App context. The
`pending_input_changed` now resets the flag after notifying subscribers.

Closes https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/12589
Forces Zed to require user permissions before running any basic
potentially dangerous actions: parsing and synchronizing
`.zed/settings.json`, downloading and spawning any language and MCP
servers (includes `prettier` and `copilot` instances) and all
`NodeRuntime` interactions.
There are more we can add later, among the ideas: DAP downloads on
debugger start, Python virtual environment, etc.
By default, Zed starts in restricted mode and shows a `! Restricted
Mode` in the title bar, no aforementioned actions are executed.
Clicking it or calling `workspace::ToggleWorktreeSecurity` command will
bring a modal to trust worktrees or dismiss the modal:
<img width="1341" height="475" alt="1"
src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/4fabe63a-6494-42c7-b0ea-606abb1c0c20"
/>
Agent Panel shows a message too:
<img width="644" height="106" alt="2"
src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/0a4554bc-1f1e-455b-b97d-244d7d6a3259"
/>
This works on local, SSH and WSL remote projects, trusted worktrees are
persisted between Zed restarts.
There's a way to clear all persisted trust with
`workspace::ClearTrustedWorktrees`, this will restart Zed.
This mechanism can be turned off with settings:
```jsonc
"session": {
"trust_all_worktrees": true
}
```
in this mode, all worktrees will be trusted by default, allowing all
actions, but no auto trust will be persisted: hence, when the setting is
changed back, auto trusted worktrees will require another trust
confirmation.
This settings switch was added to the onboarding view also.
Release Notes:
- Introduced worktree trust mechanism, can be turned off with
`"session": { "trust_all_worktrees": true }`

Release Notes:
- Added a new value to the `restore_on_startup` setting called
`launchpad`. This value makes Zed open with a variant of the welcome
screen ("the launchpad") upon startup. Additionally, this same page
variant is now also what is displayed if you close all tabs in an
existing window that doesn't contain any folders open. The launchpad
page shows you up to 5 recent projects, making it easy to open something
you were working recently.

Tracking Issue (does not close):
https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/35552
This is somewhat of a blocker for
https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/40035 (but also the current
behavior doesn't really make sense).
The current behavior of `ThemeSelectorDelegate::set_theme` (the theme
selector menu) is to simply set the in-memory settings to `Static`,
regardless of if it is currently `Dynamic`. The reason this doesn't
matter now is that the `theme::set_theme` function that updates the
user's settings file _will_ make this check, so dynamic settings stay
dynamic in `settings.json`, but not in memory.
But this is also sort of strange, because `theme::set_theme` will set
the setting of whatever the old appearance was to the new theme name. In
other words, if I am currently on a light mode theme and I change my
theme to a dark mode theme using the theme selector, the `light` field
of `theme` in `settings.json` is set to a dark mode theme!
_I think this is because displaying the new theme in the theme selector
does not update the global context, so
`ThemeSettings::get_global(cx).theme.name(appearance).0` returns the
original theme appearance, not the new one._
---
This PR makes `ThemeSelectorDelegate::set_theme` keep the current
`ThemeSelection`, as well as changes the behavior of the
`theme::set_theme` call to always choose the correct setting to update.
One edge case that might be slightly strange now is that if the user has
specified the mode as `System`, this will now override that with the
appearance of the new theme. I think this is fine, as otherwise a user
might set a dark theme and nothing will change because the
`ThemeAppearanceMode` is set to `light` or `system` (where `system` is
also light).
I also have an `unreachable!` in there that I'm pretty sure is true but
I don't really know how to formally prove that...

Closes#42288
This will actually print the parsing error that prevented the vscode
settings file from being loaded which should make it easier for users to
self help when they have an invalid config.

There was a TODO in `crates/settings/src/settings_content/theme.rs` to
make this rename.
This PR is just splitting off this change from
https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/40035 to make reviewing that
one a bit easier since that PR is a bit more involved than expected.

When trying to split and clone a non clone-able workspace item we now
attempt split and move instead of doing nothing. Additionally we disable
the split menu buttons if we can't split the active item at all.
Release Notes:
- Improved handling of unsplittable panes
Split out from https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/40774 to
reduce the size of the reland of that PR (once I figure out the cause of
the issue)

Closes#39172
This refactors when we resolve UI keybindings in an effort to reduce
flickering whilst painting these: Previously, we would always resolve
these upon creating the binding. This could lead to cases where the
corresponding context was not yet available and no binding could be
resolved, even if the binding was then available on the next presented
frame. Following that, on the next rerender of whatever requested this
keybinding, the keybind for that context would then be found, we would
render that and then also win a layout shift in that process, as we went
from nothing rendered to something rendered between these frames.
With these changes, this now happens less often, because we only look
for the keybinding once the context can actually be resolved in the
window.

Also reduced cloning in the keymap editor in this process, since that
requiered changing due to this anyway.
Release Notes:
- Fixed some cases where keybinds would appear with a slight delay,
causing a flicker in the process
In the process of adding pickers for the theme and icon themes fields in
the settings UI, I felt like there was an improvement opportunity in
regards to where some of these components are stored. The `ui_input`
crate originally was meant only for the text field-like component, which
couldn't be in the regular `ui` crate due to the dependency with
`editor`. Given we had also added the number field there—which is
similar in also having the same dependency—it made sense to think of
this crate more like a home for form-like components rather than for
only one component.
However, we were also storing some settings UI-specific stuff in that
crate, which didn't feel right. So I ended up creating a new directory
within the `settings_ui` for components and moved all the pickers and
the custom input field there. I think this makes it for a cleaner
structure.
Release Notes:
- settings_ui: Added the ability to search for theme and icon themes in
their respective fields.
We were spawning the process on the foreground thread before which can
block an arbitrary amount of time. Likewise we no longer block
deserialization on the terminal loading.
Release Notes:
- Improved startup time on systems with slow process spawning
capabilities
We've been considering removing workspace-hack for a couple reasons:
- Lukas ran into a situation where its build script seemed to be causing
spurious rebuilds. This seems more likely to be a cargo bug than an
issue with workspace-hack itself (given that it has an empty build
script), but we don't necessarily want to take the time to hunt that
down right now.
- Marshall mentioned hakari interacts poorly with automated crate
updates (in our case provided by rennovate) because you'd need to have
`cargo hakari generate && cargo hakari manage-deps` after their changes
and we prefer to not have actions that make commits.
Currently removing workspace-hack causes our workspace to grow from
~1700 to ~2000 crates being built (depending on platform), which is
mainly a problem when you're building the whole workspace or running
tests across the the normal and remote binaries (which is where
feature-unification nets us the most sharing). It doesn't impact
incremental times noticeably when you're just iterating on `-p zed`, and
we'll hopefully get these savings back in the future when
rust-lang/cargo#14774 (which re-implements the functionality of hakari)
is finished.

Includes improvements in button padding, ways we space elements out,
more consistent use of some components, and cleaning up redundant
buttons styles. Pretty much nothing changes in the design, though.

This PR renames the following actions to make it easier and prioritize
the UI version of interacting with them:
| Before | After |
|--------|--------|
| `OpenSettingsEditor` | `OpenSettings` |
| `OpenSettings` | `OpenSettingsFile` |
| `OpenKeymapEditor` | `OpenKeymap` |
| `OpenKeymap` | `OpenKeymapFile` |
Release Notes:
- Rename actions to open settings (UI/window and JSON file) as well as
to open the keymap (editor tab and JSON file).
Prior we only logged the crate in `log_err`, which is not too helpful.
We now assemble the module path from the file system path.
