About a dozen test files mutate process environment (apply_settings_to_env, direct os.environ writes) and relied on each test's own discipline to restore it; under xdist a missed restore poisons whichever tests share the worker afterwards (order-dependent flakes). One autouse conftest fixture snapshots os.environ before every test and restores it in place afterwards (clear + update on the real os._Environ) — closing the whole leak class structurally instead of policing individual call sites. The 10 monkeypatch.setattr(os, "environ", dict(os.environ)) instances are removed as the same class: swapping a plain dict in severs the C-level putenv sync spawned subprocesses inherit from, and the fixture now owns restore. A two-test canary pins both the revert and the real-mapping invariant. Closes #282. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
